Reliability Engineer. Security Tech Lead. Systems Designer.

I build and secure the systems that quietly hold the world up.

I’m Jessica “Jess” Theodat, a Senior Site Reliability Engineer at Google with nearly two decades of experience across infrastructure, reliability, and security.

About

I’ve spent nearly two decades working on the systems behind the systems.

I’ve worn a lot of hats along the way—web developer, IT consultant, systems administrator, network engineer, reliability engineer, and security technical lead across startups, universities, and Big Tech. That range gave me a practical understanding of how applications, networks, infrastructure, operations, and security fit together—and where they tend to fail each other.

At Google, I became the company’s first Black woman Site Reliability Engineer. Over time, my work shifted from keeping large systems reliable to securing the infrastructure and trust decisions underneath them.

As a Senior Site Reliability Engineer and Security Tech Lead, I’ve worked across several security domains. I’ve led efforts to protect enterprise compute and storage infrastructure from insider threats and other risks; designed zero-trust architectures, vulnerability-management programs, and security capability roadmaps; and helped raise security maturity across a mix of on-prem and cloud environments.

Today, I work on Core Security Infrastructure spanning identity, access, and software supply chain security—in plain English, the systems that help decide who gets access to what and which software can be trusted to run.

A big part of my job is taking ambiguous security problems, breaking them down, and getting them to a point where teams can make good decisions and move forward. That often means making the tradeoffs clear, bringing people with different priorities into alignment, and helping shape risk and architecture decisions that work for the organization as a whole.

I’ve also been self-hosting, automating, and building on-premise systems for years. Privacy has long been part of that practice. I’m now expanding that work professionally, with a focus on helping executives and other high-risk individuals understand how scattered pieces of digital exposure can become meaningful risk once they’re connected.

Built layer by layer

Nearly two decades moving deeper into the systems behind everyday technology. Each chapter added another layer to how I build, operate, secure, and reason about them.

My work expanded from reliability into securing the infrastructure and trust decisions underneath it. I’ve led efforts across enterprise compute and storage security, insider-risk reduction, zero-trust architecture, vulnerability management, and security capability roadmaps across on-prem and cloud environments.

Today, I work on Core Security Infrastructure spanning identity, access, and software supply chain security—the systems that help determine who gets access to what and which software can be trusted to run.
